Roquefort – Viaduc de Millau – Larzac (english)

A magnificent day to discover the Larzac plateau

PROGRAM

The morning will start with a panoramic view of the Cirque de Navacelles, a huge 400-metres deep canyon dug by the Vis river. Then we will continue by visiting the village of la Couvertoirade. A small fortified village built by the Templars, this one will give you the impression of going back in time to the time of the knights. We will walk to the windmill, from there a magnificent view of the village and the region will be open to you. It will be time to discover the typical dish of the country: the aligot sausage, a speciality made by mashed potatoes and cheese accompanied by a sausage.

Then we will across the plateau to discover one of the largest viaducts in the world, designed by the english architect Norman Foster: the Millau Viaduct. With a certain finesse and a gigantic size at the same time, this viaduct fits perfectly into a very beautiful landscape. The dimensions are colossal: 300m high and almost 3 km long. Opened in 2004, this viaduct attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, including both tourists and motorists using this link  between Causse Rouge (in the north) and the Plateau Larzac (in the south).

At the end of the day, we will go to the village of Roquefort, famous for its blue cheese made from sheep‘s milk. We will visit the Roquefort cave, a small underground labyrinth and discover this natural miracle that transforms cheese into a unique experience in taste. Since it is only 10°C in the cave (optimal temperature for the maturing of Roquefort AOP), bring warm clothes. At the end of the visit you will have the opportunity to taste several Roqueforts from the cave.
